The BioLiver Platform is a tool that allows researchers to assess the effectiveness of hepatic devices and therapies for liver diseases. It is a living, functional ex-vivo liver that is perfused with oxygen and nutrients and offers flexibility through control over perfusion location, temperature, blood pressure, and flow. Its goal is to support the development of cures and therapies for liver diseases and reduce fatalities and suffering.
I have been working on improving the mechanical environment of the BioLiver Platform. By optimising the flow dynamics and addressing potential sources of mechanical stress on the organ, the aim was to achieve longer-term perfusion with fewer complications. The result is a more robust and reliable platform for researchers and clinicians to study liver physiology. The results suggest that this receptacle has the potential to improve the viability of organs during ex vivo perfusion. I believe that this work has the potential to significantly impact the field of organ perfusion.
Throughout my time at LifeTec Group, I was able to work closely with a team of experienced professionals and learn from their expertise. I gained new insights into the various career paths that are available to me, and I found myself considering the possibility of pursuing a master’s degree in this field. Overall, my internship at LifeTec Group was an invaluable experience that helped me to better understand the potential of combining biomedical engineering with industrial design and the impact it can have on society.
